I haven't done the employment service before and wondered what tips folks might have? I just registered, but haven't done anything else (ie uploaded my resume etc), so I'm not sure what the next steps will bring. Also, the interviews take place for 5 days, is it important to be available every single day or is it okay, for example, to miss Friday and Tuesday? Thank you in advance! you don't need to be there the whole 5 days. each interview is about 20-30 minutes. Completely reasonable to miss two days. I'll only be available for interviewing myself on Sunday and Monday. Not even the interviewers are there every day necessarily. Just make sure to block off the days that you won't be around. Once you do have an interview scheduled, its good to block out the space just before and after to give yourself time between interviews. It's a little tough to jump from one to the next. Be able to describe your research succintly and clearly. Have some questions, but expect this to be informational primarily. Then again, I didn't get any interest from my 5 or 6 interviews last time, so maybe i'll all wrong with my idea of what to do @ the employment service. lol.

I've completed the ASA employment service in 2009, & did not find many employers interviewing. For those of you going to ASA & employment service, I am wondering how things are looking this year. I'm not asking about specific employers, just how things are generally looking. Thanks!

there are currently only 9 jobs listed in the employment service. This seems low for July 5th. hope there's some more postings soon, otherwise i'll be dangerously free on a saturday in vegas...

I've been looking at the ASA job bank and already registered for the employment service, but where do I find the schools that have posted these? One of the jobs I'm applying for specifically said they'll do these interviews. Thanks.

The job bank is separate. For the employment service use es.asanet.org.

When I registered for the ASA meeting, I didn't add the Employment Service option (for reasons I'll skip here). Today I went to the website to see which employers would be interviewing in case I wanted to sign up. Here's the automated message I received. [Someone didn't change the city name, unless I need to register in San Francisco for the LV conference. ] "It looks as if you have registered for the Annual Meeting but not the Employment Service. You will be unable to use this service until you are in San Francisco and add the Employment Service to your existing registration at the On-Site registration booth."

you can't see what jobs are hiring unless you sign up for the service.
In past years some generous soc rumor mill members who were signed up have posted info on which schools were hiring in the rumor mill, so that others could see and decide whether they should sign up.
Anyone?

just out of curiosity, does anyone know how many schools conduct interviews at ASA in the average year?
i heard it was more than 80 a few years ago, but that seems impossible.

just out of curiosity, does anyone know how many schools conduct interviews at ASA in the average year? i heard it was more than 80 a few years ago, but that seems impossible. From an ASA Footnotes article, February 2010: www.asanet.org/footnotes/feb10/asa_forum_0210.html"The empirical evidence of how the economic crisis has impacted the profession of sociology can be found in the ASA’s 2009 Annual Meeting employment service. "In 2007, 92 employers listed 126 sociology jobs and approximately 1,835 interviews were scheduled. "In 2008, 117 sociology jobs listed by 70 employers and approximately 1,631 interviews were scheduled. "At the annual ASA conference in San Francisco (in 2009), there were 10 sociology jobs listed by 7 employers in the annual conference employment service. "...The number of candidates who participate in the employment service has remained fairly constant, 437" I recall around 30 jobs listed in ES last year, but I could be wrong about that. This seems in line with the trend of schools posting fewer positions in July and August, perhaps signaling a more general trend towards a more compressed job market season that really kicks into high gear after the fall semesters have started. There could be more explanations, such as schools have tighter budgets and not being able to justify the expense of using the ES for informal interviews. Anyway, I hope this answers your question. I would be very surprised if more than 50 schools are participating this year.
