Anyone know whats going on with the Annual Meeting's Employment service?
Seems like there should be more information by now.

It's a very long job season and the ASA is nearly 4 months away. My advice: chill, dawg.

I too was wondering about the employment service, but given that they just got the program on-line, I think it will take awhile for the job service. Maybe it's taking awhile given that the meetings have semi-recently changed location and that's what they were focused on.

It looks like the option to register for employment services is up in the full registration are but no details yet.

The website says the employment service system will be up at the end of May. Oh the anticipation!

Hi, I noticed there is a spot to "leave a note for employer". Any idea how important is this? What are you supposed to say exactly besides "Please consider me". For example, do you list why you would be a good fit? Not sure what, if anything, an employer would want there.

I have no idea if these are important from an employer's perspective. I usually put something in there that shows I am being selective and to add some personalization. Usually something like this:
"Dr. Soandso,
As a sociologists specializing in 18th Century Bike Culture of France, I feel I would be a good fit for the position at Collegetown University. I hope to learn more about what your department is looking for in Las Vegas.
Sincerely,
Justin Time"
Hope that helps.

The sample letter was very helpful, thanks.
I too do not know how important these messages are. I did the job service 2 summers ago (I've been a postdoc in the meantime) and I left the messages blank yet still got interview invitations.

Yeh, it is a crapshoot in terms of what people want.
I did the same last year for the employment service (left some blank) and got invites. I feel like if things are worded okay, it can't hurt.

...I hope to learn more about what your department is looking for in Las Vegas... ...and hoping the answer is not "gambling and a generally good time."

For those of us unable to attend ASA because of the overlap of the switch in weekend and the start of the semester, which schools have listed themselves in the Employment Service thus far?

Are they schools that have not posted ads?

I haven't done the employment service before and wondered what tips folks might have? I just registered, but haven't done anything else (ie uploaded my resume etc), so I'm not sure what the next steps will bring. Also, the interviews take place for 5 days, is it important to be available every single day or is it okay, for example, to miss Friday and Tuesday? Thank you in advance!
