I rarely get calls from unidentified numbers on my cell phone. This week I have received three calls from unidentified numbers. One about student loans near default, two from some sales scam. Each time my heart skips a beat before I answer. Bleh. Total let down. This week has been seriously depressing.

This week has totally sucked. The people who are getting interviews are incredible, postdocs are getting more applicants than regular jobs...I'm screwed.

I'll go ahead and heap on. I am so depressed I hardly know what to do with myself. I just keep on trying to work through it all and keep working on my job talk and syllabi and articles... but I feel such dread that it's nearly paralyzing. I never thought I would come to hate my life by choosing this career path. It would be different to not find success but have some free time on my hands. Instead, I work around the clock, seemingly for nothing.

Agreed. But honestly, this whole fall has sucked. I spend all my time applying to jobs, getting rejections and working on a job talk that I may never give. During working hours, my heart skips everytime I get a "chime" that I have an email or the phone rings. BBBBBLLLLLEEEEECCCCKKKK!

Get ahold of yourselves people!!!!!
It is EARLY EARLY in the cycle.
How are some of you getting rejection letters already? Just chill. How many places did you apply?
You will get a job SOMEWHERE. It might not be ideal, but you will get one somewhere. And if you don't like where you end up, you can hit the job market again with a PhD in hand and a job supporting your application habit.

I hate to break it to you, but some of us with that Ph.D. in hand, a job we took because we thought we'd do better in a few more years, some good pubs under our belt, and lots of other shiny stuff are still drowning in rejection right now.

Yeah, I'm ABD, and I have interviews left and right.
4 phone interviews and an on-campus one already, and I applied to over 50 places. I have received 1 rejection letter.
How on earth are you drowning in rejections letters this early? Are there even enough places whose deadlines have passed to receive enough letters to be drowning in them?
You all sound a little dramatic. If you have pubs that aren't complete crap, if your areas aren't complete crap...err culture...and if you graduated from a school that isn't complete crap, then you should be good to go.
I realize it is a crap shoot (no pun intended), but come on. You guys sound like Captain Kirk on a strange planet. "Oh. My. Goodness. We. Are. Going. To. Die."

Not to sound like an asshole, but do you know how utterly foolish you sound? You want to act like the expert on the market on the basis of one campus interview as abd? Come back when you have a job.

Some of us aren't looking for the sorts of jobs involving phone interviews, straight shooter. Enjoy your high for now.

You are right. I am very inexperienced.
I am working my butt off to get a job, any job, and you people are on here bitching about not getting a better job when you already have one.
Sorry if I don't offer any sympathy while you look for your dream job while experiencing a steady income.

I'm sorry guys. I really do sound stupid and rude. I apologize. I am as frustrated as the next guy, but trying to stay positive. Good luck in your search. I hope you all find really good jobs that aren't just any job, and I hope I can at least find a job.

i've received 4 rejection letters/emails and know of 7 other positions i applied for that are now interviewing. i've had one phone interview and made 1 short list. the problem for me is that while it is early there were 4-5 schools there that I thought I would be competitive for. in 2 instances faculty ask i apply for the position. in 3 others the school is way further down the food chain then where i 'should' end up. i think a lot of people here are coming to terms with the fact that we are just not as competitive as we thought we would be.
and a job somewhere is not why most of us went to grad school...starbucks is a job somewhere...
S.C. Get a Better Game....you got to be kidding

S.C. Get a Better Game....you got to be kidding Don't assume that lower-ranked departments are going to snap you up just because they are "way further down the food chain". The matter of fit comes into play, as does the question of whether you only applied to them because they happened to have an opening during a down year. (Some even explicitly ask you this.) Beyond this, there are likely several other high-level PhDs on the market who have sent applications to those departments, so expecting that #80 will automatically be excited by an application from #25 is too presumptuous. Finally, it's not as though failing to land a position at a lower-ranked school precludes one from being considered by higher-ranked ones. There is quite a bit of legitimate randomness in this process, as well, so it is doubtless that many worthy candidates are passed over for reasons that go beyond individual qualifications.
