I rarely get calls from unidentified numbers on my cell phone. This week I have received three calls from unidentified numbers. One about student loans near default, two from some sales scam. Each time my heart skips a beat before I answer. Bleh. Total let down. This week has been seriously depressing. It is one thing to get the e-mails that have ambiguous subject lines and then open them to find that one is out of the running, but I definitely feel for the OP with this one. I have gotten a few calls that turned out well (relatively speaking), but I try not to get too excited when I see a foreign area code because of the risk that the call will amount to nothing.

I was really, *really* feeling down last week over CV envy, but I got out in the sun for a walk with my dog and focused on the good stuff on my own CV. It actually made me feel a lot better. And yesterday, I got an R&R at a good journal. So that was pretty nice too!

I hope so too. This last week has been completely awful for a wide variety of reasons. I've already convinced myself that I won't get a job. Good luck everyone!

Hang in there. I have to keep telling myself it's early - and it IS still very early.
I think a number of us were spoiled by how fast a few search committees moved, and expected each SC to move at a similarly fast pace.
I think this week I'll actually sit down and knock out some reading and writing I've been putting off for awhile. Hopefully that will help me disengage from the wait (and this forum!).

Also, note that there are a lot of b-school jobs this year, even more than the past few years, and the b-school market is later. Even if you aren't working in an area that b-schools would consider, some of your competitors on the Soc market are. Once they figure out that they can earn twice the salary, have four times the research resources, and get tenure with two thirds as many publications if they go the b-school route, they'll clear out of the Soc market soon enough...

I've found that expectations on the B school market are much saner as well. Maybe the way that the sociology market was 10 years ago.

Is it too late to switch subfields?

I am a third year faculty member at a lower-ranked Research I, and I am looking to trade up (like many of us who feel like we are under-placed because of the crappy job market the past few years). Having been on the other side of four job searches now at my current university and one at my PhD institution (top 20), I can tell you that fit is extremely important. Schools always have certain niches they want to fill, even within subdisciplines, and even if they claim the search is open. We have passed up people who are clearly better candidates (i.e. more pubs in higher ranked journals) because of fit, or because of random preferences of faculty members. So much of this is arbitrary, so at least you can externalize your failures.

What is "b school"?

It's a subpar school, less stellar than a A school. But seriously, the business schools that I'm familiar with seem to have higher tenure requirements than the soc departments...does someone else have different info?

Even though we are only a few days in, I can officially say that this week can fuck right off along with last week.

last week SUCKED. this week looked bad but then BANG..an unexpected R&R from A**. As far as I know, it might make no difference for search committees..but at least I don't feel like a complete failure. And of course, my advisor is excited, which never hurts.
