For what it's worth, if I remember correctly, the Employment Service only really picked up 2 or 3 weeks before ASA. At least a handle of jobs were even posted the week ASA started.

Yes, write a nice, very brief, formal message requesting an interview. Not sure about length, but I would say around 3-4 sentences should be enough.

The Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at Saint Francis University in central Pennsylvania invites applicants for a full time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Sociology beginning Fall 2015. A strong interest in undergraduate education is essential in this position. The successful candidate will be a generalist in sociology and will teach a course in gender inequality, an introduction to criminal justice course, and will develop other courses in the sociology of gender and/or stratification/inequality as well as develop a course which will be cross-listed between sociology and criminal justice. The teaching load is 4-4. A Ph.D. in Sociology is required by time of appointment.
