Although I rarely come to these boards anymore, thank you to the moderators (Archivist and ElDuderino) who put the time and energy into this thankless task.
To those suggesting that anonymously posting negative/critical information that is personal (directed towards a specific individual) is somehow ok then you simply need to grow up. In no way are you describing the “grown-ups” table. And in no way does this make for a “real conversation(s) about sociology” but rather something you would find on TMZ or some other sh*t.

The reason that last part of your post was crossed out was that the letter s between brackets is the ubb code for crossing out text. I replaced with parentheses. Just wanted to clarify that.

Please resist the urge to speculate on "inside hires" while the application acceptance period is still open. See the "Moderating Claims of 'Inside Hire'" thread for more information.

A note to "opnogood" :
You raised an interesting topic, but I edited your initial post to remove references to the individual whose behavior inspired it. As you are very well aware, this person draws a lot of attention to himself and attracts a lot of commentary. Your original post will inevitably raise questions of "who is XX and what did he do?" and then the floodgates will open. He is very early in his career, and I don't want to subject him to any further scrutiny on these boards.
Feel free to respond here, but keep it meta and avoid making specific references to this person or his exploits. Also note that I would apply these same principles with regards to discussions of any junior colleague, especially a graduate student.

Hi Duderino and Archivist,
I wanted to ask you about your opinion of the other site. Do you guys ever visit it? Do you find it useful or not? Do you think that both sites can coexist? Do you plan on keeping this site going for the near future?
I'm just curious given your role as moderators.
Thanks a lot!
The main purpose of this thread is to log notes from the moderators explaining why some posts might have been edited or deleted.
Given that, it is unlikely that you would have received a comment had it been posted elsewhere. The internet is a big place, and there's always room for another website or chatroom or bulletin board. What goes on in any other site is unlikely to have an impact on what takes place here. So long as others find the service useful, I'm sure that we can find somebody willing to maintain it.

If this wasn't obvious before, posts from obvious trolls will be deleted without comment.

If this wasn't obvious before, posts from obvious trolls will be deleted without comment. This would be a great motto for SJMF!!!

Good. Keep doing it. That's what makes the "other" site a cesspool. Well, one of the things.

Let's keep the "new positions" and "status" section threads specific to an institution. More general questions, comments, or discussions about other websites don't belong there.

We don't discuss individual job market candidates here. Ever.

To protect the privacy and negotiating ability of all job candidates, we don't divulge names here.

While it is ok to name names after a contract has been signed, it is not ok to attack or question hiring decisions based on nothing but speculation. This includes accusing or speculating that a search was a sham or biased towards a candidate, internal or not.

Don't name names until a contract has been signed. If you're not sure if the successful candidate is ready to have his/her name announced, hold off.
If your name has been disclosed here prematurely, please contact one of the moderators. We'll do our best to scrub it in order to give you a chance to inform your colleagues, the search committees you've been negotiating with, your spouse's employers, etc at your discretion. Just create a registered account with a verifiable email address and send one of us a private message.
