How many applications have you submitted this year? Generalist or specialist positions? What's your specialty? How long on the market?
Just curious.

I have 67 in my list so far, but haven't submitted them all yet. 22 are in sociology; the others are post-docs or in related disciplines (mostly polisci). First year on the market.

Applied to 7 schools. 3rd time on the market. 1st as an Assistant Prof. Applied to mostly open positions. Two of them were looking for a quant person.
My first time out, I applied to 10 or fewer. I was early, trying the market. Made 2 short lists. Second time out (2012), I applied to 20 or 25, all R1s or places with PhD programs. Got two early interviews/offers. Accepted my current job in early November.

applied to less than 30, all assistant prof. positions - but I could also stay on another year as a grad student if I don't get the right job. Don't want to take a job where I know I would want to move again in a year or two.

I've only applied to a handful of schools. I'm kind of testing the water this round since, like ABD, I can stay on here for another year if I don't find something. I only applied to ones that appeared to be a really good fit. I'm also in a fairly specialized field. PhDs in my dept. typically apply to fewer jobs in our niche market.

Now that we're at the tail end of the market, I'm curious to know how numbers of applications compares to interviews and offers. Anyone want to restart this?

It's my second time on the market. I'm ABD. I applied to all TT Assist Prof positions, mostly Sociology (both general and specialist), but also a handful of interdisciplinary positions.
Submitted: 31 apps Invitation to Phone Interview: 1 Invitation for Campus Interview: 3 (Two invitations went straight to campus visits, no phone interview. I only went to one of these campus interviews) Job Offer: 1 (accepted)
Last year I submitted 38 apps. I had phone interviews with 4 schools, campus interviews at 2 of those schools, and a job offer from 1, which I declined.

I'm guessing this thread attracts those who were successful and repels the rest, bc I think fewer people get jobs than dont.

I am abd, first year on the market. I accepted the job offer early in the cycle, or would have submitted more apps.
