I'm guessing this thread attracts those who were successful and repels the rest, bc I think fewer people get jobs than dont. Submitted: 50+ In my specialty area (Soc of Art & Culture): 1 (still pending) Phone interviews: 2 Campus interviews: 1 Job offers: 0 Currently a pauper. It's true - you see the same thing in the 'Offers' thread. To see that you'd think that all starting sociology professors have a 1/1 load in a major urban area with 200% 401(k) matching, free health/dental/vision, and starting 9-month salaries of $90k.

Currently a VAP, but applied for a job at a different school that fit my areas, was the type of school I wanted to be in, and was in the same region as my partner.
One application led to one campus interview and one accepted offer. The process from submission of application to job offer only took a little over a month. Feeling very lucky.

Currently ABD, first year on the market. Sent in about 80 apps trying to cover ALL fields. Mostly assistant professor (mostly soc, some Af Am studies), some postodocs (~8), and fellowships (~5).
Phone interviews: 4 (and 1 postdoc interview scheduled for next week) Fly outs: 2 (1 straight to fly out) Offers: 1 assist prof, 1 national fellowship Yet to accept, both offers came in recently as shockers because I had nearly lost hope for this year.
Take away: it ain't over yet, also casting a wide net has benefits.

Could people also put which round of the market this is for them? I think that would put this more in perspective

Would love to know why some of the folks here turned down their offers? If you're inclined to share...

Currently an assistant prof. Was feeling out the waters before I got too far along on the tenure track, but only for jobs that really looked like I'd be willing to leave for:
Applications: 12 Phone interviews: 0! Campus interviews: 0! Job offers: 0!
Looks like I'm staying put for now.

Second time on the market Status: Post doc Submitted: about 80, mostly soc, all TT Phone/Skype interviews: 11 (+ declined 2) Campus interviews: 4 (+ declined 1) Offers: 1 (accepted)
I made a lot of mistakes my first time on the market, mistakes I think I managed to correct (at least somewhat) the second time around. For those who did multiple campus interviews and didn't get any offers, ooof. What do you think you did wrong? (I know fit is everything, but you were considered a good enough fit to get a campus interview, so it couldn't have just been that.) What might you do differently in the future?

No. You do not have to do something wrong to have an interview (or 2 or 3) and not get an offer. Should you always think about ways you can improve? Sure. Its difficult (if not impossible) to perfect to all people in all ways for 48+ hours. There are so many great well-qualified, and over-qualified candidates out there. And so many reasons within a department that a search might go one way over another, perhaps even with internal divides. So don't fall into the trap of feeling like you must have done something terribly wrong. Maybe you did, anything is possible. And always use the experience to improve. But its equally if not more possible that they would have loved to have all 3 of their candidates and just went a different way.
