oh, okay, if you've sent in your apps, they might contact you.
My advice would be, if you're aiming to move up, don't call them, they'll call you. They know you want their job.
If you're looking for a lateral move, or a downward move (for location, for a spouse, etc.) then they might not know you really want their job--then an email (brief!) could be ok.
If you don't get contacted for a chat at ASAs, I wouldn't worry to much, either. It could mean that the sc sees your app as strong and you'll be invited for a phone interview anyway.

Also, on the point of confidentiality. Every school who registers for the employment service can see every candidate (not just the ones who express interest).
You might not be recognized during the speed-dating zoo at Denver, but we'll see your name in the ASA portal. And if you're an Asst Prof, it'll get back to your dept.

Lurker--you landed interviews through the ES once the ASAs started? How long ago was that? I ask because I just missed the deadline to pre-register for the annual meeting and hence the ES this year, and am wondering what to do. I can register for the ES on-site now, but am worried that all the meetings will already be set up by then.

I registered on site last year for the employment service, and got somewhere between 4-6 speed-interviews.
I wouldn't worry.

Apparently the employment service ran into a Y2K problem and has adjusted all of the employer numbers. It's not clear that the numbers really matter, but anyway most stayed the same but with leading zeros. The exception is Miami, which is now E024.
The employment service interface seems to suffer from a number of imperfections (e.g. filling in availability on the calendar is particularly painful). One important thing to note is if you receive an invitation for an interview you will get an email notification but without much information. You have to go to the site and go to the calendar to see details of the invitation and to accept/reject it. Towards the bottom of this invitation is a place where the person inviting you can write a note. This is the only place where you'll see any notes from the employer so make sure to check this area for details.

Is it me or are not a lot of faculty doing chats outside of the ES? I did the ES last year and arranged to meet faculty from places I planned to apply. It seems like in all, I had 12-15 interviews, half set up through the ES and half informally, through email. Most of the faculty I have emailed thus far are saying "We will have someone at ES and we'd love to see your materials through that..."
Also, does it seem like there arent as many going up on the ES as last year? Any thoughts on whether the new format/process might effect those departments that have used the ES before?
Thanks!

You realize that people are busy at conferences right? Why would you think they want to spend more of their time with you, especially if they already set aside time for the es. Pretty presumptuous, and honestly I'd be offended and think that you feel you are entitled if you contacted me to meet about a job when I had no relationship with you.
