The Employment Service module has changed this year. Now there is no way to *just* express interest in a school. The only way to express interest in an employer is to "Send Message to Employer". It's not as straight forward as in years past. Unfortunately, you then feel the need to write a note explaining why you are interested in the job (at least I do). I think keeping it short and sweet is key.
In any case, I don't think you want to let the schools come to you. It can't hurt to write a short note expressing your interest in the position. Perhaps I was not a particularly strong candidate, but a few years ago when I participated in the ES, I was only contacted by one school. All other interviews I initiated myself.
FYI: If you click on a school's ad, there is an option to "Send Message to Employer" at the top of the page.

I thought "send a message to the employer" was always a necessity to initiate an interview. There is no way that an employer will initiate contact with you in this lousy job market without you sending messages to employer.

Though I was not so lucky, last year I had friends that received interview requests without asking for them. Once you're registered for ES, all the employers can see your profile, after all.

It's a buyer's market. Send a message expressing interest if you want to be competitive.

All of my interviews last year came from contacting the schools. It can't hurt.

Some of the schools are already going through CVs and contacting people. I've been contacted for two interviews in the past week. I'm not sure how many interviews they have set up already so I won't confirm which schools are doing this, but I wanted to give people a heads up nonetheless.

ducky: did you contact the schools initially or did they contact you out of the blue?

this is a different poster than before, but i have 1 interview scheduled after i made initial contact, another interview without initial contact.
so, both strategies apparently work just as well!

Out of curiosity, which schools are scheduling already?

Does anyone have experience with ASA interviews *not* conducted through the formal employment service? As someone on the market for the second time around (i.e. I'm currently an Asst. Prof.), I'm not planning to register for the service but may be interested in one or more of the positions. Just wondering if committees ever reach out to candidates who are attending but not participating in the employment service.

We can't reach out to you if we don't know you're on the market. You've got to make the first move.
If you'd like your inquiry to be kept in confidence, let us know that, too.

Thanks, sc member - great point.
I should clarify that this presumes I have already submitted an application for the job, noting my availability in Denver in the cover letter. The only missing piece is registration for the ASA job service.
But that's good advice to request confidentiality - that could work. I'm recalling the huge room of interviews I participated in the first time around, which was hardly private. Perhaps something else could be arranged between the candidate and school for these types of situations.
