Just got this email: The Sociology Department at the University of South Carolina has been approved to hire another line like the Social Psychology line advertised earlier this fall and whose closing date has passed. The closing date for the new line is December 31, 2011. We are notifying you because you applied for that earlier position.
We will continue to consider your application active unless you notify us otherwise.
Thank you So that's something.

Good for them! I interviewed there at some point in the past, and I really liked everyone I met there.
(good for candidates as well)

Yeah, they actually got three assistant lines this year. Aside from the one social psych position that they've filled, they have another social psych line and an open line.

What do you suppose it means if I did not get that email? Out of the running?

What do you suppose it means if I did not get that email? Out of the running? My guess is that they may have never received your application or that it was incomplete. My reading of the email is that it was sent to all who applied. I would check with department to make sure they have your materials if you want to be considered.

What do you suppose it means if I did not get that email? Out of the running? They have a new deadline, so everybody is still in the running, in any case. What you want to know is just whether they have a complete profile for you or whether you need to resubmit materials. As an aside, I find it interesting that they are beginning the search all over again rather than just starting from where they left off with applicants who didn't make it to the end of the last process. I suppose that it is good practice to contact applicants and give them a chance to submit new information if anything has changed (e.g. an article that was under review at application time but has since been accepted), and I assume that they won't waste time flying out candidates who were not chosen from amongst the first set of interviews, but I do think it wouldn't be too frowned upon if they simply extended an offer to the candidate whom they liked second-best, unless said candidate has already signed on elsewhere.

I have it on good authority that they plan to offer the (second) social psych position to their second choice from the first round. However, I doubt that she'll still be available by the time they are authorized to extend an offer.

However, I doubt that she'll still be available by the time they are authorized to extend an offer. Well, this actually just makes good sense. If they went through this vetting process to determine the most favored candidates already, it's not like anyone who was interested in applying there wouldn't have likely submitted the first time around, so I seriously doubt that they will get many more applications this time. It seems like they are required to broadly advertise the position for the sake of formality, but that the choice candidate(s) should already have been identified last time around. Maybe somebody looks better now than he or she did two months ago, but I wouldn't expect a full search for the second position.

Looks like they just opened up an open search as well. Trying to capitalize on a buyer's market, perhaps?

ASA job bank. Posted on the 16th, deadline of Dec. 31. Here's a preview: The Department of Sociology (http://www.cas.sc.edu/socy/) at the University of South Carolina invites applications for an Assistant Professor in a tenure- track position, to begin in August 2012. The department seeks candidates from all areas, but is particularly interested in those who complement our existing strengths in Social Stratification and Inequality, Health and Well-being, and Social Psychology. Completion of PhD degree by the time of employment expected. Applicants should submit curriculum vitae, a statement outlining their research and teaching agenda, three letters of recommendation, and samples of writing. Applications should be emailed in PDF format to Erica Walsh at walshef@mailbox.sc.edu. For full consideration, all application materials must be received no later than December 31, 2011. By the way, I'm the booster who keeps talking about how nice they are.
