Any updates? This request is for information about the "assistant professor of sociology" position, not the "assistant professor of instruction" position.

Campus invitations are going out. Do you know b/c you (or a friend) has received one, or is this 'insider' knowledge?

I'm a Prof at Northwestern and campus invitations have not gone out. This week would be the EARLIEST but it could easily take 2 more.

I guess I could say more - pool of 292 applications has been narrowed to 16. The 16 do not know who they are. We have to get from 16 to 3 or 4. And since we ALL actually read ALL the files at this point, these can be long meetings. But the department's collaboration, collegiality, and commitment in this process sis one of the reasons it is an amazing department. Can't wait to have one of you join us!

Just want to say "thank you" to the NU faculty, not just for correcting the information above (BTW, this is at least the second time this semester that someone has posted on this board that invitations to interviews were extended/interviews were scheduled when it was not true, I wonder what is up with that..) but also for providing information on the number of applicants -- it seems that ~300 is the standard number of applications for open positions at prestigious universities this year -- as it provides context for the 288 (of us) that will not receive an invitation to interview. Thank you also for the reassurance that our files, which consume so much, not only of our time but perhaps primarily emotional energy, receive the attention that they are due. So, thank you.

Just received a thoughtfully worded rejection (notifying me that I was on the 16-person short list but am not being invited to campus). Congrats to the lucky candidates with campus interviews!

If a person does not receive a rejection (ahem) could that mean either they 1) are so far down the list that they don't warrant a rejection (too bad, so sad) or 2) they might (maybe maybe please please please) be on the short-short list?

But I haven't received a rejection either and there's no way in hell I'm getting a campus invite. I wouldn't even sniff the top 16. I'm guessing it's a "you're so far down the list you don't even deserve the courtesy of a rejection email" thing. Sorry.

But it's nice to entertain the dream for 30 seconds before I go back to figuring rocking in the fetal position under my desk.
