I really appreciate how wikipedia has become a respectable academic source of knowledge. The future of sociology looks bright! :/

Any sense of their willingness to consider a criminologist? I looked at the faculty and they are all Sociologist (except for the Social Work folks). They posted a Crim position a few years back and they hired a Sociologist. Just wondering if there is a some bias against Criminologist in general within this Sociology department.

Save your rant for when people starting citing it in ASR. Whether or not Maryland is in the South, we all seem to agree that Mississippi is indeed the armpit of the universe.

It's obviously the South; anything below Staten Island is the South.

Growing up in the Delta is the reason why I'm a sociologist today. No other discipline could help me understand the things I've seen.
I met the MSU folks at an ASA interview a while back. They seemed very interested in my MS background and thought it would be nice to hire a "local." I never got around to applying, however. I'm conflicted about it: on the one hand I want a TT job; on the other, returning would remind me some old wounds I dont want to open.

I definitely understand your reasoning black hen. Mississippi has a very bad racial history. I will say that at Mississippi State the Sociology department understands these situations. I believe you would be pleasantly surprised at the department. However, I understand your reasons for not wanting to apply if you don't. As far as criminology Mississippi State has a very strong professors in that area. I do not know if they are looking for one this year or not. never hurts to apply though.

Re phi beta kappa: some places have university wide hiring priorities like these--a separate pot of cash that can be used so depts can get an extra hire

The stigma surrounding jobs in places like this is the reason why locals - like black hen - are attractive candidates. With such a competitive market and people feeling like they may have to settle for a "crummy" position (e.g., non-tenure track or a spot at a for-profit school, to cite another thread), to me it would make sense for locals to take advantage of their attractive status and go ahead and apply. What have you got to lose by just applying?

Racism is rampant everywhere...Boston has it's own bad history. Still does.

From what I know it's Starkville that is the problem, not the dept.
