The schools I interviewed with fell along the lines of three categories: 1. Looking for a prestige hire: Clemson, Oberlin, Knox, Beloit, UN-O 2. Looking for the best fit: Mississippi, North Central, UCF, Hope, North Florida 3. Looking for a warm body: Salem St., Birmingham Southern

I would add Oregon State to the prestige category.

I'm not sure about Beloit looking for a prestige hire -- I got the impression they were looking for fit.
Meanwhile, I'm pretty sure UMass-Boston was looking for prestige to bolster their new PhD program.

What gave you the impression they were looking for prestige vs. fit? Just curious,

...that wasn't me above, but you can sort of tell from the kinds of questions they ask: are they really interested in the things they talk about in the job ad? or did they spend half the interview telling you how 'up and coming' their department is.

I didn't get that particular impression from any of the schools that interviewed me.

Statements such as: Let me tell you this, it is really not a very good place to work right now, but we are hoping that someone will be interested and help revitalize the department.
