Just got a call that I am second in line for the job (if the first one doesn’t accept). It’s my only fly out and while I can hold on to another year, I feel kind of bad since I know that the person they gave the offer to has a much better publication record than me. It feels shitty. I honestly rather not know that I’m second and just get a flat out rejection. I know I’m still in the game but now my fate depends on this person rejecting the position for something better. I don’t know how to o feel. It’s mixed emotions. Its surprising that they told you were second - while you should never read too much into things, it may be that the committee doesn't think their first choice will accept and told you so you to know where you stand since they are worried that you get another offer and take the other offer where they really want you. And even though you feel bad that the other candidate has a stronger pub record.. it also increases their chances that they have another offer they will take instead. I don't think many committees ever call to tell someone they are second so I would think that is a really good sign. Good luck!

This thread has been very helpful and encouraging. Good to know that so many people are in the same position and that I'm not alone. A question for those who've been down this road before-how many of you received invitations in the winter or spring semester after the first round of interviews took place?

@cactus I had a campus visit last week and am really struggling with the waiting too. I know I’m in a lucky and privileged position to have a shot at a job in academia. At the same time, the fact that so much hinges on their decision is really hard. I’m trying to exercise, meditate, eat well, and sleep, but I am not getting much done these days. I had a recent interview at what would be a dream job and dream location and also waiting to hear and it's agonizing!! They said I likely wouldn't hear back until after the holidays but just in case I'm checking my email and this board roughly 600 times per day. I keep waking up in the middle of the night for a couple of hours to rehash various convos I had on the interview in my brain.

Hang in there, anon interviewee, and I hope you can get some good sleep soon!
If the search committee chair tells you they’ll reach out by x date and they don’t reach out by then, can you presume they’ve made an offer to someone else?

But like everything in the job market process, there are always exceptions & randomness that can slow things down. Also depends on how long they havent contacted you. A few days, no worries. A few weeks...more worries.

Happy holidays to everyone. Couldn’t have done it without this board…but I can’t help but feel upset about this cycle given that I didn’t get any offers and my fly outs weren’t that great. It’s hard to not feel like a failure. One more year of awful salary …

Happy Holidays everyone. It's now essentially the end of the year and for those who don't have an offer yet, I can certainly commiserate and empathize. Personally, I'm struggling. I'm in the last year of my postdoc. My CV is much stronger than last year, and I had 2 flyouts last year, but I didn't get any this time. I applied to 100+ places and got 5 Zoom interviews (still waiting to hear from one). I know it's "just a job" but my goal has been to be a professor for years. I have looked at other jobs and I just can't find myself being nearly as happy in any of them. I already have applied to a few industry jobs over the years and actually got a couple of interviews (each job sounded horrible). I will seriously need to figure out what I can do next this Spring. So I'm mostly just venting on this anon forum.

My heart goes out to everyone, and big hugs all around. I wish I had something more to offer.

Question for those still on the market: at this point, are people thinking of going to industry or?

Question for those still on the market: at this point, are people thinking of going to industry or? I’m still unsure. I’ve interviewed at a few industry jobs and they all did not sound enjoyable at all. But maybe if I applied to more industry jobs, I would find some better fits. Being a professor is still the goal even though it seems less likely with each day.

I don't know! Really depends on what happens with my partner and if I can find another year of funding for my postdoc. Lots of chaos and uncertainty. What are you thinking of doing?
