Dreading the annual holiday tradition of family members asking me if I have a job, when I'm going to graduate, etc. And the answer is, as always, a resounding shrug.

Family members usually have no idea how difficult it is to get an academic job. It is the most difficult "normal" thing most of us will have to deal with outside of divorce, health issues, etc.

I have been ghosted by two search committees. No response two months after the campus visit. Not sure why they do it to me.

Not saying your case is very normal, but it's quite common that the search committee members do not respond to your contacts after a certain stage, even after the job talk/campus visit. I also do not know why, but had the same experience in the last job market. I read a thread that committee members cannot contact or respond to the candidates to let them know the results individually, but it's still too brutal.

I don't understand this. Some places can tell you that they gave a "verbal" offer to someone else so you don't have to wait for months. That seems humane. Other places say nothing and you don't find out until a generic rejection email.

Really nothing you can do about it after the interview is over.

If I haven't heard back from a position 5 weeks after a zoom interview (& I sent a thank you email the following day), does it make me look more pushy or enthusiastic if I email them for an update a month later or should I just give up hope?

I think five weeks past zoom is likely an indication that you have not advanced to the next stage. I don't think anyone would blame you for reaching out if it helped provide you closure, but my guess is that invites for campus visits have been extended. I wish it wasn't the case, but many if not most committees don't let even zoom interviewees know they didn't advance until well after the search has concluded.

Last year I had 2 on-campus visits by now. This year, my CV is significantly stronger, but have zero campus invites. It's all so random and frustrating.

Assume nothing until you have evidence otherwise. A TT line was created for me out of nowhere. Focus on what you can control.

If you have an offer, I don't think it hurts to let them know that you're interested in the position at their school and would like some more information on the timeline. If you don't have an offer, I think you should just wait patiently. Sometimes, HR has stupid policies and prevents the search committee from letting people know if they've been rejected until an offer has been accepted by someone.
