I had two flyouts this year and didn't get the offer either time. I'm unsure if I want to keep trying to get an academic career. The idea of continuing to bounce around with postdocs and VAPs during an uncertain economy & job market does not appeal to me very much.
When is it time to move on? I've only done one postdoc. Should I do one more before moving to industry? Or should I just make the jump now?

Same here. Two flyouts no job. I thought I fit the job very well but still no response. Got an offer for another postdoc, which is more policy-oriented. I guess I may use this postdoc to explore other career options.

I am in a similar situation...two campus visits, no offer (still waiting to hear back from one), currently a precariously employed researcher. This is my third year or so on the market. Next year will be my last, I've decided. I'll go all out, prep my materials a lot over the summer, etc. That's how I am deciding to end it...just saying in advance "this is it." I can already feel the burnout, I can barely get any work done anymore. I am starting to feel a bit unwell mentally. That's when it set in for me, the realizations that A: I am burned out and B: if I continue doing this for a significantly longer period of time I will actually lose my mind.

Honestly, if I have to work as a researcher for some company, I think I'd be fine with that. I'll probably go on the market 1-2 more times, but only for TT jobs I would really be excited about. Being able to work from home and have a higher salary are some pretty strong benefits industry jobs have over academia.

Sorry that it’s happened to you.

It seemed like an unfriendly and dysfunctional department during the visit though, so I wasn't too sad I didn't get the job.

I hope you all got jobs this year!
Add me to the list of fly out failures. With so few jobs available, it looks like my academic career is over. Industry does not sound like a good fit for me, but it is either that or unemployment.

Industry does not sound like a good fit for me, but it is either that or unemployment. The job market continues into the spring. Please do not consider yourself a failure. There are still schools that are (or will be) interviewing, and if you study subfields that are high in demand (e.g., race crime or health), your academic career doesn't have to be over!

Thank you above poster. But sadly, I don't study a popular area in sociology. So my odds are extra low. Yeah I'll try again next year, but I'm trying to be realistic. My time is running out. Congrats to everyone who made it, I hope you all cherish being in the academy. Some of us gave everything we had just to come up short.

Feeling defeated. Applied to about 20 jobs, had 10 Zoom interviews, 2 campus visits, and no offer… This whole process is mentally draining.

There are just too many qualified PhDs and too few jobs. If you are getting interviews, then you are good enough to be a TT sociologist. However, you struggle with "fit" or luck.

I second the comment that if you are getting interviews, you ARE good enough. I'd also say that you must have been a good fit, which is why you got invited. You just got unlucky. I'm so sorry. This is a pretty tough position to be in. I did get lucky, so this may be coming from a position of privilege. However, at the start of the job market process, I really had no idea about how I'd fare, and I wrote a letter to my future self promising to myself that I will prioritize my well-being over my success. Which meant that if I didn't get a tenure track job, I wasn't willing to put myself through the anxiety and instability of doing a post-doc, and would whole-heartedly search for non-academic jobs. I know some postdocs are great, and they might actually improve your chances of success, so I am by no means suggesting that people shouldn't do postdocs. But only I know myself and what I can emotionally cope with, so I made a plan that put my well-being first. I advise digging deep and trying to really understand where you are in terms of your stress tolerance threshold. If you can take more, by all means go for another postdoc. But if not, do remember that this was always just one of many paths to a happy and fulfilling life.
