I have heard very little from the CC's I've applied to since the 1st of the year - including City College of SF and Truckee Meadows in Reno

I don't know this for sure, but my sense is that many of these places hire local people and probably hire someone already adjuncting. I can't imagine many of these places are going to fly in candidates from all over to interview there. I don't know, anyone disagree?

For example, many CCs will do skype interviews in the first round, so a candidate's location isn't an issue. Candidates on the CC market can expect to cover their own travel costs. In case you're interested, the Chronicle of Higher Ed has some good overview articles on the CC interview process.

Yeah, I think it can go both ways. I know that for my current position, I did and phone interview and was invited to campus - I had to cover my own travel cost though. I found out later that my travel to visit the campus had a big impact on the committee's decision. I've also been called a few weeks after a phone interview and told they were going with an inside higher....kind of random and unpredictable

I have interviewed at four community colleges in total, two the year I went on the market and got the job I have now, and two last year. In each case, I had a fly in campus visit after a first round phone or Skype interview. The job I have now was different, they went to straight to campus visits and flew me in from the midwest to the east coast. All expenses were paid by the colleges for each interview, so it does vary.

Can anyone confirm a rumor I've heard that the entire California CC system requires candidates to pay for travel for both rounds on campus? I am curious since they have more than half of the open CC jobs. It is definitely Florida's statewide policy and at least some other places (though not sure if the others were statewide or institutional policies). In these cases you are going up against 8-10 people, which gets pricey. This is one reason some schools will only offer interviews to local candidates.

Got an email yesterday saying the Ventura CCD search at Moorpark is cancelled. And an email a few days ago from Orange Coast College (1/27 deadline) saying that the committee has just met for the first time and will begin reviewing applications.

When I applied to my current position I was an outside hire, also quite a distance from the college (16 hours). There were some current adjuncts in that process. I was required to cover my own expenses for the interview, however they were willing to make concessions for the next round of interviews as a Skype interview. I was hired. However, the same committee/institution varied quite a bit on the last hiring process and were not as willing to look at outside applicants, a lot of assumptions about willingness/ability to pay for travel was involved in the process--we did have a great inside hire that applicants were up against which probably shaped the decisions. So even at the same institution I think it can vary depending upon the committee, the applicants, etc.

Anyone heard from Santa Rosa Jr. College? The deadline was not too long ago, but I am anxious!

Santa Rosa's deadline was last week. Expect about 1-2 months before hearing from CCs, in most cases.

For my CC interviews in CA, I've had to pay my way for the first round but the school has reimbursed for the second. Also, I've often been the only candidate coming in from distance. My experience is that, at least for schools in or near metro areas, the local advantage is a real thing. SoCal schools especially seem to be more focused on candidates with a connection to the area.
