I applied to several jobs at Missouri this year and they were all cancelled, most recently a position in Public History that was pulled just weeks after it was announced. Do you mean at UMKC, or at Mizzou as well?

What happens if a candidate already had signed a contract several months earlier--as appears to have happened with both UMKC's positions? Would they have any recourse or are they completely out of a job? As someone who interviewed for one of these positions (but luckily ended up with an offer from a different school), I just can't believe that positions could be cancelled so long after hiring has been completed. These positions were replacement hires and sorely needed, so the only reason they might be frozen is budgetary issues. Still, it's really terrible news and I feel for anyone who has been directly affected.

Do you mean at UMKC, or at Mizzou as well? I don't know about UMKC, but Mizzou Sociology made two hires - one ABD and one senior hire (joint position with Black Studies).

This case shows how time can be a precious commodity and both employers and candidates may not want to wait a long time for an offer to be accepted.
UMKC's first offer was rejected by the candidate. They were in the middle of drawn out negotiations with their second choice candidate when the money for the position got pulled.

To be clear once you have accepted an offer and signed the relevant paperwork, an offer cannot be withdrawn no matter what kind of financial shit storm may later emerge, correct?
It sounds like this is not what happened at UMKC, but am curious if it has the potential to happen elsewhere.
I know for me if I accepted something only to have it later yanked there would be all kinds of hell to pay!!
If schools can fuck over candidates like this it only seems fair that candidates should be able to accept multiple offers....

I have not heard of schools yanking offers once the paperwork has been signed, at least not in this academic year of job searching.
