What would you say is(are) a bad sign(s) during an interview (zoom or campus)?

Nobody shows up to your teaching demonstration (When that happened I lost out to an insider candidate)
They try to ask your ethnicity or ask what your spouse thinks about moving there
You ask what they like about working there and they don't have an answer
Everyone looks miserable and the people who work together don't seem to get along during the meals

No one came to my job talk 5 weeks ago. They sent a graduate student and a secretary. That is bizarre! Especially at an R1. Not sociology department but human development and family studies.

If it’s a top heavy department there is usually a reason. I had one where I asked about the most recently tenured faculty and it was TEN YEARS AGO and no one could tell me about current tenure expectations. The only junior TT faculty (who was also the only person of color in the 20-person, R1 department) had been hired the year prior and was not super enthusiastic about his job. Yikes. So glad I didn’t have to take that one.

The committee asked me 20 questions during the one-hour interview. Most questions repeated each other so I doubted whether they paid attention to my answer. At the end of the zoom campus visit, the department head said "Hope we can see you again one day somewhere in this beautiful world". It has been two years and I still have not received rejection letter, but I know they finally hired their own PhD student, who did a 2-year visiting professor in another school before the interview.

On one, the dept chair (who I was told was a control freak in whispers from other faculty during my visit) set up an undergraduate student to "run into" me on campus and talk to me about my research and how they had read it. It was some badly contrived "test" to observe how I interact with students. It was so cheesy and off-putting, and basically a horror show that crawled out of linked-in to real life (the kid was super nice though).
The chair also told me that I'd be expected to oversee roughly 50 senior theses per semester to cover all their graduates, plus 2 other classes, and that my quantitative teaching evals all needed to be 4.5/5.0 or higher when doing so. There is no way I was robotic enough to have held my face from cringing at that moment.
Anyway, glad I didn't even get an offer. lol.

Great advice here. +1 to faculty not appearing friendly (or being friendly) to each other. Lack of questions about you and your work is another since it shows they don’t care.
The vibe check is subjective but so important. How did you feel after the interview? It’s normal to feel tired but did you also feel kind of depressed? If so, maybe not getting an offer is a blessing in disguise.

Faculty chew gum during the interview, which may mean they do not care, even though it is a campus visit.

They keep making "suggestions" of how to improve your work rather than accept it and mention how you can expand it at the university. It's different from "have you considered z?" but rather is something like " as you tease out X....as you continue doing y.." essentially unsolicited advice from skeptics.
Another is if they make you feel like you're annoying them and they don't have your full attention.
Finally, if you ask "what's the timeline for the decisions" and they say 3 weeks or more (does not apply if you're the first one to be interviewed) or if they say we don't know. IF they really want you there they will definitely give a rough estimate.
