If you get a Zoom interview and/or campus visit at an institution and don't ultimately get an offer, but the same place posts another job that fits your work in a subsequent year, is there any reason no to apply again?

I applied to my top placement last year and didn't make it past the zoom interview. They posted another position this year, so I reapplied. I focused on the developments I made in the last year to structure how my candidacy improved to be a more viable option. This was also an argument for how they can expect me to progress at their institution. I also learned more about their department from the previous interview to figure out how I could better fit their job posting. I just got back from a visit with them, and think I have a good shot at getting the spot. Ultimately, the worst they can say is no. The best they can do is see the kind of candidate you are and possibly even the dedication you have to their school. To be fair, there could even be a chance they ranked you second last year, and this gives them that chance to secure you.

Thank you for sharing your experience and congratulations on your campus visit! Hope they come through with an offer for you.

I think the answer is almost always yes, you should apply again. Many factors can change between years. The people on the search committee might be different. The applicant pool will definitely be different. Your CV and materials might be different enough to make a difference. The circumstances within the department also could have changed to make it even more pressing that they hire on this line. Lastly, nobody will judge you for applying again.

All of this is reassuring, maybe especially the last sentence 😬. Thank you!!

My case is just an opposite example of the previous comments. I was invited for the campus visit in the last job market, and as it was a better R1, I wanted to move if I got an offer. They simply ghosted me, and posted the job again in this job market.
I also had the same concern with you, so contacted the new search committee chair. I simply did the same, focused on the improvements, showing several additional publications and certificates.
The result was that I was not even invited for the Zoom interview. So I think it's really case by case, on either side. I think there's no reason to retreat from applications. Who knows?

I interviewed twice at a place (zoom round one year and no campus visit, then in person visit the next year with no offer). The place I'm at now, I also went around the block 2x with, and am stably employed.
