Has it felt worth it so far? Do you ever think maybe an industry job would have been better?

I love my job and the autonomy it provides. I like my colleagues and I love my lifestyle. But if you have regrets, you should see what else is out there! A TT position is a great perch from which to search for something else.

I love my job, I love doing research, I work with great students who are upwardly mobile at a regional R2. But I hate the state I had to move to, they are restricting abortion here and trying to restrict trans rights, so even as a full professor I am applying to other jobs to try to move somewhere I actually want to be. I moved far from my social supports and am distant from my family. My school is also moving towards higher and higher teaching loads and less time for research. So I'm considering jumping ship entirely if I can't find another academic job, and have been working on expanding my coding skills.

If you want to transition to alt ac, change all your courses to a multiple choice midterm and a multiple choice final, nothing else. That will cut down a lot on grading and reading what chatgpt has to say about sociology, and you can use that time to burnish your marketable skills.
I typically do multiple choice exams but add one or two handwritten short-answer questions, but I only add the short-answers because I don't mind reading them and I like my job (because it gives me time and autonomy to do my research). So I'm not trying to save time to move on to a new career.
In general, you should for sure for sure for sure cut back on teaching if you're at an R2 or R1. Don't do anything more than the bare minimum on teaching. You can be a perfectly fine and well liked teacher without spending all your time on course prep and grading. That is how all our incentives are structured.

That is how all our incentives are structured. All true, but really sad. Imagine spending so much money on college just to have your professors do the absolute minimum. On the other hand, big universities have more resources, but students need to know how to use them to benefit.
