Rich in history, steeped in tradition, Hampton University is a dynamic, progressive institution of higher education, providing a broad range of technical, liberal arts and graduate degree programs. In addition to being one of the top historically black universities in the world, Hampton University is a tightly-knit community of learners and educators, representing 49 states and 35 territories and nations. The Department of Sociology houses the following majors: Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Cyber Security (the criminal justice track). The Department of Sociology offers the Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology with an emphasis in social inequality and social policy. The concentration in social inequality focuses on race, class, and gender inequalities and on the processes through which such inequalities become embedded in society's social structures. The Department seeks to fill an Assistant or Associate Professor position in the area of Sociology with a focus in social inequality beginning Fall 2023.
Duties and Responsibilities
he successful candidate will be required to teach a variety of courses such as: Introduction to Sociology, Social Problems, Introduction to Social Research, Advanced Research Methods, History of Sociological Theory, and Contemporary Sociological Theory. Faculty are required to advise Sociology majors and hold office hours. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the scholarly advancement of the department through a productive research agenda that includes grantsmanship. Additionally, the successful candidate should demonstrate dedication to the progress of the Department of Sociology, the School of Liberal Arts and Education, and Hampton University through service activities.
Qualifications
Qualified candidates must have an earned doctorate in Sociology from an accredited university. Experience in and evidence of successful teaching in a university setting is preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in research and grantsmanship. The expectation is to hire at the Assistant Professor rank, but considerations will be made to fill the position at a higher rank depending upon the qualifications of the applicant. Rank and compensation are commensurate with credentials and experience.
