For those of you who are in relatively small departments, what are some things you really like about it and what are some things you don't like?

We have about 10 TT faculty in my department.
Pros: you get to know your colleagues on a more than just superficial level, other faculty are often willing to support your research (e.g., reading drafts, helping you recruit participants, etc.), there isn't a physical divide between quant/qual scholars like how there sometimes is at large R1 institutions
Cons: if more than one person takes a leave of absence, quits, etc., it really puts a strain on the rest of the department. We have to scramble to find replacements, start searches for visiting/temporary instructors, and we might not be able to use course releases when we want.
