I agree with the general tone of these last emails. We can use our sociological training to understand what motivates the mother-in-law phenomenon. Let's be clear: academia can be very tough on family relations because of its jobs characteristics. We are the modern day monks and nuns.
I don't think anyone should be surprised that family members of the trailing spouse/partner are less likely to be excited about having their son/daughter be the trailing spouse/partner and move very, very far away to a state with more cows/pigs/cactus/tumbleweed than people.
