About the opportunity
Applications are invited for the position of Level A Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Sociology/STS) at the Sydney Centre for Healthy Societies within the Discipline of Sociology and Criminology. The Research Fellow will work directly with Dr Katherine Kenny, Professor Alex Broom and other team members, on a wide-ranging program of research centered on the social, political and economic dimensions of health, including questions of sustainability, climate and health
Our work at the Sydney Centre for Healthy Societies is underpinned by a deep commitment to social justice and health equity and includes collaboration with practitioners and other stakeholders to translate findings into real-world solutions. We focus on combining theoretically informed analyses with concrete translational implications to better address some of the key health challenges that we face as individuals, society and a global community.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will contribute to a unique interdisciplinary program of research. They will draw on their knowledge of social theory/health sociology/environmental sociology/political economy and Science and Technology Studies (STS) (or similar) to contribute to research into the sustainability of health and healthcare as they are currently configured and experienced by individuals, communities, care providers, political stakeholders and society, as a whole.
As part of the role, the Postdoctoral Fellow will help enhance collaborations across the University, including between the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Science/SydneyNano, around issues of scale, sustainability and health.
We are seeking applications from academics who can bring a background in a relevant area(s) of sociology/STS including but not limited to: health sociology, science and technology studies, social and political theory, political economy, environmental sociology, gender and cultural studies, sociology of the body/emotions, sociology of the family, etc.
The successful applicant will conduct high quality research, publish in high impact peer-reviewed journals, develop applications for external funding, and contribute to centre-wide collaborations.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
undertake qualitative fieldwork, including with key stakeholders around issues of sustainability and health
lead qualitative data analysis and develop project findings for a range of audiences
lead and contribute to co-authored journal articles with members of the broader team for submission across a mix of sociological and applied outlets
assist with collaborative events/workshops, including interdisciplinary symposia
contribute to the preparation and submission of applications for competitive research grants
take responsibility, under supervision, for the day-to-day logistics of carrying out a large collaborative research program on sustainability and health
work with research assistants and centre professional staff to develop ethics submissions and amendments, and ensuring that all aspects of ethics-related protocols and report requirements are fulfilled
providing day-to-day support to the SCHS team in relation to a variety of research projects
work with Centre Directors, Theme leaders and Centre research staff, to further the vison and objectives of the Sydney Centre for Healthy Societies.
About you
a PhD in sociology, STS, or a closely related discipline
an emerging research profile evidenced by high-quality peer-reviewed research in sociology anthropology, health services research, public health or related discipline
a demonstrated capacity for high-level engagement with sociological theory
skills and capacity to design, manage and disseminate findings from social research projects including experience in working with qualitative data
demonstrated project management experience
the ability to contribute to the preparation and submission of research grants
demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a member of a team, capacity to succeed in a fast-paced research-intensive environment, and sound written, verbal communication, and interpersonal skills suitable to collaborating in an academic context
