Open for all applications from all expertise areas, with preference for criminology, social justice, medical sociology (see below) - review of applications begins April 18. Begin as Fellow with possibility of shifting to tenure-track.
Provost & VP for Academic Affairs: Miami University’s Heanon Wilkins Fellows program recruits annual cohorts of up to ten (10) scholars with a strong interest in pursuing a career as a faculty member, pairing them with dedicated mentoring and intentional preparation for a career in higher education, ideally as a tenure-eligible faculty member at Miami University.
This program is named after Dr. Heanon Wilkins, Miami University's first full-time African-American faculty member. A distinguished professor of Spanish, Portuguese, and Black World Studies, Dr. Wilkins is an enduring and inspirational example of Miami’s teacher-scholar faculty, having received Miami's highest honors in teaching, research, and service. Honoring his impressive legacy, we hope to recruit cohorts of excellent future faculty to Miami through this program.
Each academic year, we publish a call for Fellows applicants whose area(s) of expertise align with areas of expected need in the next two years. While we cannot guarantee tenure eligible positions for all Fellows, Fellows have been successful in securing tenure eligible positions at Miami in the past.
While we encourage applications from scholars from all disciplines, we are particularly interested in applicants with expertise in the following areas:
Biological and Physical Sciences (all disciplines and areas welcome)
English (African American literature; African American and/or Latino/a/x rhetoric; poetry; or linguistics with a specialty in African American, and/or Latinx discourse and/or dialect.)
Criminology and Social Justice
Engineering (all disciplines encouraged)
Computer Science (all areas of expertise encouraged)
Farmer School of Business (all disciplines encouraged)
Nursing
Physician Assistant
Arts Management/Administration
Music Education (focus on Choral instruction)
Emerging Technology in Business and Design (Game Design, e-sports)
Public Health
Special Education
Teacher Education
Social Work
Student Affairs in Higher Education
Sports Leadership and Management (Sociocultural Aspects of Sport)
The Fellowship is for a minimum of one full academic year (9-month faculty appointment) with a strong possibility of reappointment. Heanon Wilkins Fellows have reduced teaching responsibilities in order to foster a vibrant research program, engage in mentoring and career development, and the opportunity to engage with highly accomplished teacher-scholar faculty colleagues and Miami’s impressive students. The Fellows program is designed to prepare individuals to be highly competitive in future faculty searches (tenure track or teaching/clinical professor or lecturer (TCPL) positions), especially those we anticipate at Miami University.
Required: Miami University welcomes early-career candidates who have completed their doctorate or terminal degree not more than four years prior to the August 2022 appointment date. Candidate must be authorized to work in the United States on a fulltime and indefinite basis.
Submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a statement of proposed research (one to five pages) indicating area or discipline, statement of teaching philosophy, and sample scholarship, and a one-page diversity statement addressing past and/or potential contributions to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion through research, teaching, and/or service to jobs.miamioh.edu/cw/en-us/job/499947/heanon-wilkins-faculty-fellowsvisiting-assistant-professor-or-instructor. Letters of recommendation may be requested from the references listed in the application and do not have to be included at the time of application; the dissertation advisor should be one of those references. Inquiries about the position may be directed to Dana Cox at Dana.Cox@miamioh.edu. Screening of applications will begin April 18, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled. Decisions will be made by the end of May.
