The Department of Sociology has an anticipated opening for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level beginning August 2012. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Sociology at the time of appointment. The primary teaching responsibility for the successful candidate will be courses in undergraduate research methods and statistics. All other specialty areas will be considered, but preference will be given to candidates with substantive interests in the sociology of education and/or medical sociology. The Department of Sociology has approximately 80 majors, eight full-time faculty members, and offers a BA in Sociology with optional concentrations in three areas: Global Sociology; Stratification and Inequality; and Crime, Law, and Social Control. The Department of Sociology also contributes courses to a number of interdisciplinary minors, including Environmental Studies, Women’s Studies, African and African-American Studies, Latin American Studies, Legal Studies, and the recently created minor in New Orleans Studies.
Candidates must submit evidence of the skills needed to teach both research methods and statistics at the undergraduate level, as well as examples of quantitative scholarship. In addition to teaching and research responsibilities, colleagues are expected to advise undergraduate students, participate in department, college, and university committees, and maintain an active involvement in professional activities. Candidates must be committed to excellence in undergraduate liberal arts education. The department has a strong commitment to teaching students to think critically about social justice principles and their realization in the community.
