The Department of Sociology at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track, nine-month faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 2022. We seek candidates who are teacher-scholars with research and teaching interests spanning at least two of our following four undergraduate concentrations: Criminology; Families and Intimate Relationships; Social Inequalities; and Power and Social Change.
The position requires a Ph.D. in Sociology. Candidates who are ABD will be considered; however, the position requires completion of all doctoral requirements in Sociology by the date of appointment.
Successful candidates will have a well-articulated research agenda that includes a record of, or demonstrated potential for, scholarly productivity, and a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring undergraduate students.
The Department of Sociology is committed to attracting and retaining a diverse faculty. We seek candidates who will strengthen this commitment.
The Department of Sociology has 20 full-time faculty members. The department serves approximately 170 undergraduate majors and offers minors in sociology and health and aging. Along with its undergraduate offerings, the department is the academic home of two online graduate certificates in sociology and aging, health, and society. Additional information about the Department of Sociology is located at soc.appstate.edu
Instructional duties typically include a 3:3 teaching load, student advising, curriculum development, thesis mentorship, and online instruction. Faculty members are expected to maintain an active program of scholarship and participate in service activities.
Candidates should indicate in their materials which of the sociology courses in our curriculum they are prepared to teach, including 1) core sociology courses (which include The Sociological Perspective, Research Methods, Social Statistics and Data Analysis, Classical Sociological Theory, Contemporary Sociological Theory, Applied Sociology, and Senior Capstone); 2) courses in their areas of expertise already available at Appalachian; and 3) any potential elective courses they'd like to develop. We will give preference to applicants with a desire and ability to teach our required Applied Sociology course.
All candidates are encouraged to address within their application materials how their professional and/or lived experience, teaching, service, and mentorship will strengthen diversity and inclusion efforts.
