Those of you who have navigated the Crim job market before... Please help out a newbie. I know in some fields, including Soc, you can get interviews (or use the job service to schedule interviews) with departments that have a posted search, at the national conference. But is that true for ASC and Crim jobs?
I've got an accepted paper presentation at ASC. Generally, once I submit and get an acceptance, I'm committed to going... but this year I've been struggling to make up my mind about whether to go. I have in-person teaching obligations, a limited budget (don't we all?), and a nagging fear that I might get a campus interview invite around the same time (I've already had three zoom interviews, and have two others scheduled in the next week). So choosing not to go may help minimize unnecessary absences from teaching, reduce stress, and make other expenses easier to manage. For the record, I have presented at other conferences (including ASC) before.
Is there a job market benefit (beyond informal networking) in going to ASC, under those circumstances?

Hi newbie, In the 6 or so job market cycles I've taken part in, I've had maybe ONE job-related interaction at ASC. It was kind of a "pre-interview" and it didn't go anywhere. There is usually a little job fair type event at ASC, and you can put a sticker on your name tag to indicate that you're on the market. But beyond that, I've never found it particularly helpful (and while I've been on the market a few times, I've also landed a few jobs, so I say I've been fairly successful). If it's any help, I'm on the market again and am not planning on attending ASC due to the reasons you mentioned. The most useful I've found ASC in terms of jobs simply has to do with the position postings they have on the website, but as for the conference itself, I don't think (at least for me) that it's been helpful.
