The Department of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh seeks a tenure-track assistant professor to start September 1, 2022. Specialization is open but health and illness; gender; race/ethnicity; criminology; and/or environmental sociology are preferred areas. The successful candidate will have demonstrated effectiveness in university-level instruction and ability to teach our required (classical and contemporary) sociological theory course, introductory classes, and upper level courses in their area of expertise. They will also exhibit a commitment to and the potential for scholarly productivity and public sociology; interdisciplinary collaboration; service provision and enhancement of diversity, inclusion, and equity in the department, campus, and community. Responsibilities will also include developing and maintaining an active research program, advising and mentoring students, and engaging in appropriate service activities.
A regional, comprehensive university committed to the teacher-scholar model, UW Oshkosh is part of the venerable University of Wisconsin System and has a total enrollment of over 10,000 students. Sociology is housed in the College of Letters & Science, the largest of UW Oshkosh’s four colleges. Located in the state’s third most populous metropolitan area, comprised of a number of mid-sized cities along the Fox River and the state’s largest inland lake, Oshkosh offers a nice combination of amenities and relatively low cost living and is also within driving distance of Milwaukee and Madison, Chicago, and Minneapolis-St. Paul.
Qualifications
Required:
Ph.D. in Sociology expected by September 1, 2022
Demonstrated effectiveness in university-level instruction and experience or ability to teach our required (classical and contemporary) sociological theory course, introductory classes, and upper level courses in their area of expertise
Record of publications or potential to publish in scholarly journals
Evidence of effective communication and collaboration
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
Preferred:
Broad sociology background as well as specialization in health and illness; gender; race/ethnicity; criminology; and/or environmental sociology
Evidence of interdisciplinary background or potential for teaching in cross-listed courses and building relationships with colleagues in partner programs such as Women’s and Gender Studies, Criminal Justice, and Environmental Studies majors; African American Studies, Health, Humanities, & Society, and Social Justice minors; and Hmong Studies and Indigenous Studies certificates
Conducts public sociology, consistent with the Wisconsin Idea
