The Department Head is responsible for administering an academic department within a college which may include and is not limited to, faculty recruitment and development, faculty evaluation, program development, program review, curriculum development, student advisement, departmental budgeting and budget control, class schedule planning, and general supervision of the teaching, research, and service and related scholarly activities of the department.
The Head will support the Sociology and Anthropology Department in its promotion of diversity, inclusion, and social justice. Administrative duties include, but are not limited to overseeing faculty recruitment, development, and evaluation; program and curriculum development; student advisement; budgeting; class scheduling; and general supervision of teaching, research, and service activities of the unit. The typical teaching load for the Head is one course per semester. The successful candidate must be committed to working with diverse student, faculty, and community populations and must share the department’s commitment to community engagement and the public affairs mission of the university.
The minimum acceptable qualifications for the position of Department Head are prescribed by the College Dean in concert with guidance from the Provost. A demonstrated commitment to promoting a diverse environment is required.
A PhD in Sociology, Anthropology, or closely related discipline, successful administrative experience in a baccalaureate-granting institution, and a record of teaching, research, and service that meets or exceeds criteria for tenure and the rank of full professor in the department. A demonstrated commitment to promoting a diverse environment is required. The field of specialization is open, but applicants should be supportive of Public Sociology and Applied Anthropology.
