Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology
The Department of Sociology at Furman University invites applications for a 1-year Visiting Assistant Professor position beginning Fall 2021.
A Ph.D. in Sociology by time of appointment is preferred but not required. Research and teaching specializations are open, although we are particularly interested in candidates who can offer courses related to criminology, law and society, and/or deviance. The individual we seek is dedicated to excellent teaching in a liberal arts environment and welcomes opportunities to work with students as peers and partners in learning. Our faculty have committed to be inclusive mentors who equip our students with a robust understanding of inequality in order to prepare them to live and work in a diverse world. Teaching load is 2-3.
Candidates should submit a cover letter, C.V., contact information for three references, a teaching statement, and a diversity statement. The teaching statement should outline how the candidate puts their teaching philosophy into practice in the undergraduate classroom. The diversity statement should describe how the candidate’s teaching, scholarship, mentoring and/or service might contribute to a liberal arts college community that includes a commitment to diversity as one of its core values.
Before submitting their application, we strongly encourage candidates to familiarize themselves with our departmental curriculum and Furman’s strategic vision, The Furman Advantage.
Application review will begin 1 March 2021, but applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
Furman University is a nationally ranked private, residential liberal arts college. Its location at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and its proximity to the award-winning downtown in the City of Greenville provide ample opportunities for integrating field experiences into the curriculum.
Furman University is committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in all facets of university life, and strives to create an anti-racist community through excellence in teaching, mentorship, and programming. Numerous initiatives and programs are underway or planned to promote these ideals, including: historic projects, dialogue initiatives, the Center for Inclusive Communities, and a proposed major in Africana Studies.
Furman University is an equal opportunity employer committed to increasing faculty diversity. The university aims to create a community of people representing a multiplicity of identities including, but not limited to, gender, race, religion, spiritual belief, sexual orientation, geographic origin, socioeconomic background, ideology, world view and varied abilities.
