New Positions for Experienced Qualitative Researchers at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, IL
The Scientific Careers Research and Development Group at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is seeking up to two experienced qualitative researchers to join our team. Our group has been continuously funded with grants from NIH since 2008 to conduct novel empirical and interventional studies of the development and career progression of biomedical scientists. Our work places particular emphasis on understanding and addressing the slow rate of diversification of the science workforce. Data collection via annual in-depth interviews began with participants at the start of their PhD and continues annually through the PhD, postdoctoral training and early careers. The size, duration and depth of data collected through interviews is unprecedented; we are compiling the ‘career stories’ of several hundred early career scientists, as well as insights into the ability of a novel group coaching model to enhance progression toward academic careers. The population of the studies is highly diverse, allowing comparisons across racial/ethnic groups and genders. Recent publications from these studies can be found at these links:

We are seeking up to two individuals for roles as research associates. These are grant-funded positions supported by an NIH grant that will continue at least through March, 2026. At least one of the positions will require the PhD, demonstrated expertise with interview-based qualitative research, experience leading qualitative data analysis and writing of publications, as well as experience presenting research at meetings and conferences. One positon could be amenable for someone with a Master’s Degree, with demonstrated skills in qualitative data collection and analysis. Experience with qualitative research software is preferred for both position levels. Both positions would qualify for a full benefits package as provided to all employees of Northwestern University. Salaries will be commensurate with position type, experience, and similar positions with the research group.
Given the current COVID-19 pandemic, individuals would be able to start work completely or predominantly remotely, but once full return to work is approved and safe, in-person work in our research group space on the Northwestern University Chicago Campus would be required.
Interested individuals should submit a current CV, cover letter describing the experiences that have prepared them for these roles, and names of at least 3 references. References would not be contacted until at least an invitation to interview a candidate has been made, and after obtaining permission from the candidate.
Submit materials and/or questions to: Rick McGee, PhD, Associate Dean for Professional Development, Professor of Medical Education r-mcgee@northwestern.edu (preferred) or 312-503-1737 (leave message).
