FACULTY POSITION IN SOCIOLOGY
Truman State University
Truman State University seeks a diverse pool of applicants for a full-time non-tenure-track instructor or assistant professor of sociology to begin January 2021 or August 2021. The successful applicant has the possibility of reappointment for up to three additional years (9-month contracts), depending on performance, department needs, and funding.
Responsibilities: Ability to teach Introduction to Sociology, Social Problems, Sociological Theory, and upper level topics in sociology as well as to contribute to interdisciplinary teaching in the broader university curriculum or specific interdisciplinary minors such as African/African American studies, Disability Studies, Environmental Studies, Women and Gender Studies or others.
Required Qualifications: This position requires a Masters in Sociology or closely related field.
Applicants will be evaluated on:
* Academic qualifications
* Teaching background or potential for teaching Introduction to Sociology, Social Problems, Sociological Theory, upper level courses in sociology and interdisciplinary contributions to the university curriculum
* Evidence of teaching effectiveness
* Evidence of commitment to liberal arts education and to inclusive excellence with undergraduate student development and accomplishment as the highest priority
* Interest and background in interdisciplinary and/or cross-disciplinary teaching (including a Truman’s Junior Interdisciplinary Seminar and interdisciplinary minors), scholarship, or service
* Commitment to maintaining a strong research agenda, with demonstrated publishing record or prospects for significant scholarly contributions
* Evidence of developing critical-thinking and problem-solving skills in undergraduates and mentoring High Impact Experiences (undergraduate research, service-learning, internships), or demonstrated potential to do so
* Strong oral, written, and interpersonal skills
* Compatibility with the department’s needs; complementing existing faculty strengths in terms of class coverage.
Compensation and Rank: Salary for this position is $40,500 with MA or $42,525 with terminal degree; benefits package includes health insurance, retirement contributions, and reimbursed assistance for moving expenses.
Program: Sociology is located in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Justice Systems that is part of the School of Social & Cultural Studies. The department has 8 full-time faculty members and approximately 75 undergraduate Justice Systems majors and 60 minors. The department also offers courses in Truman’s core curriculum.
