Job Description
The Department of Social Sciences at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) seeks an Assistant Professor of Sociology (tenure-track, 9-month position) to begin Fall 2021. Duties include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses. A reduced load (2-2 for the first two years) is provided to allow for other duties, such as publishing research in Sociology or closely related areas, and serving on departmental, University, and professional committees. We desire candidates who: demonstrate strong research skills, have a strong record of or potential for sustained publication in peer-reviewed journals (commensurate with experience), have the potential for or prior experience with seeking and/or securing external grant funding, have worked with diverse student populations, and have the ability to teach in areas that complement or strengthen our undergraduate and graduate programs.
Required Qualifications:
The successful candidate must hold an earned doctorate in Sociology or closely related field. ABDs may also be considered but must have earned a doctorate before appointment. We are interested in candidates whose research focuses on dimensions of social inequality (race/class/gender/ sexuality) and includes the geospatial mapping of social phenomena (e.g., immigration, crime, health/illness) using GIS or similar methods, quantitative and qualitative.
TAMIU is a growing university of over 8,000 students located in Laredo, Texas, a vibrant bi-lingual, bi-cultural city with a population of about 250,000 on the U.S./Mexico border. After the first two years, course load for junior faculty is 3 courses per semester, although we offer opportunities for course releases. Additional pay is available for summer teaching. Financial support for professional development opportunities, such as attending academic conferences, is also provided. Moving expenses are covered by the university.
