Hi all: If I go on "this year's" job market (opening up in August 2020, for Tenure-Track positions beginning Fall 2021), will the hiring freezes still be going on? What's your sense from your own Departments, networks, and/or general "buzz" on the subject?

My dept. chair is on the college hiring committee and says they plan to move ahead with the fall hiring as planned. Not sure if lines will fall through as we get into fall, but we're cautiously optimistic.

I'd expect the market to take a hit at least for the next two to three academic years, but this will vary widely by geography, prestige, and public/private status.
Fwiw, the non elite SLAC that I work at has instituted a hiring freeze unless a hire is deemed essential. I do anticipate some lines being deemed essential, but I doubt they'll be in SOC department. And I think that's typical of many campuses where SOC tends to not have a lot of political capital.
Some state systems are going to be in very bad shape, lots of competing priorities for legislatures to contend with.
Of course, so much of all of my speculation depends on how the rest of this COVID nightmare continues.

The state University system I'm at has already announced deeper budget cuts than 08.
Now, even if the institution you're interested in didn't cut lines, competition is about to get a lot more fierce.
Things will be ugly.

It's gonna be worse next year. We had bailout money this year to help soften the blow. All signs point to no similar windfall next year.
