If a search committee requests additional materials, such as a writing sample or diss chapter, how long do you usually have to send them? Is it the same day or do you have a few days to refine writing?
Also, if not required to send a writing sample intially, do the majority of jobs eventually request one if you make it further in the process, or would you possibly be invited to interview without comittees seeing any writing?
thanks

They will probably want it within a day or two at most, so you need to make sure your writing samples are ready. Even if you are still working on a paper, it is better to have a good draft together ready to go, because making those rushed last-minute changes can lead to dumb mistakes. You can always send an updated version if you get an interview.
Besides, for the job talk you really want to use a strong strong piece that you know inside out, and where you will be prepared for all the questions.
