Do search committees contact all of the people they plan to interview via phone/skype/conference at the same time? Or do they stagger these emails?

Do search committees contact all of the people they plan to interview via phone/skype/conference at the same time? Or do they stagger these emails? There are no general rules about this, even rules of thumb. Every search committee does something a little different, based on local environments and their institution's past practices. I can say, however, that in all of the search committees I have been on the committee's chair has tended to draft a form letter and send it to all prospective invitees at once. It makes it much easier for us to do the scheduling if we receive everybody's calendar preferences and limitations within a few days. But even then we have sometimes contacted other candidates later, e.g. when one of our invitations was turned down and we wanted to bring in somebody else from our short list.

Thanks! That really helps! I assumed that it varied from committee to committee, but appreciate hearing what your experience has been.

I've also been on a few search committees (and have been aware of the timeline and process of a few others that I was not on), and in all cases, the initial requests for more references, interviews, etc. happened on the same day. Like the other poster said, that didn't necessarily mean that subsequent requests weren't made to replace people who dropped out of the pool for one reason or another, but the people on whatever level of list we were working from at a a certain point in the process generally heard from us at the same time.
