While ESU is less than 2 hours from Philadelphia and NYC, in reality, the Lehigh Valley with Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton is a closer metropolitan area and quite a few of ESU’s faculty, staff and students live there and commute the 30 or so miles daily. Just under a million people live in the Lehigh Valley and it has a lot of cultural amenities and affordable housing. Both the Lehigh Valley and Stroudsburg/Monroe County are increasingly diverse communities as more people are moving to the region from New York and New Jersey. Lehigh Valley International (LVI) is a decent size airport with service to most major hubs while Newark Liberty (EWR) and Philadelphia (PHL) are both about 70 miles away for international or cross-country travel.
While ESU is a teaching school, fulltime faculty are still active researchers and ESU provides opportunities to pursue grants, publications and conference presentations.

Specialization is open.
ESU, one of the 14 schools that make up the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, is among the most diverse campuses in PASSHE. Additionally, a significant number of our students are first-generation college students from working class backgrounds. In 2018, about 50% of majors in the Department of Sociology, Social Work and Criminal Justice self-identified as students of color.
