Assistant Professor, Contemporary Japanese Politics and Society
Indiana University Bloomington’s Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies (HLS) seeks a full-time tenure-track assistant professor of contemporary Japanese politics and society, broadly defined, to begin August 1, 2020. The position is 100% in HLS’s renowned multidisciplinary Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures (EALC). The teaching load is two courses per semester. Teaching responsibilities encompass both undergraduate and graduate courses and will include the teaching of a new course on “Japanese Politics and Society.”
This is an exciting moment to join the newly named and expanding Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies as it leads the university’s international research and teaching missions. Established nearly sixty years ago, the EALC department has a long history of interdisciplinarity and boasts faculty strengths in a wide array of social sciences.
Minimum requirements are a Ph.D. in a relevant social science discipline (e.g., sociology, anthropology, political science) and active research agendas examining contemporary political and/or social issues that involve Japanese-language sources and in-country fieldwork.
Questions regarding the position or application process can be directed to: Ethan Michelson at emichels@indiana.edu.
We are particularly interested in candidates combining disciplinary rigor and area studies expertise to examine real-world challenges facing contemporary Japan and who are interested in contributing to and benefiting from EALC’s new 21st Century Japan Politics and Society Initiative (established in 2018).
Applicants should submit a letter of application describing research and teaching interests, a C.V., and a writing sample along with three letters of reference. ABD candidates are welcome to apply, but must have the Ph.D. in hand by July 31, 2020. Interested candidates should review the application requirements and submit their application at: indiana.peopleadmin.com/postings/8197
Applications received by October 18, 2019 are guaranteed full consideration.
