Malindi and Lamu, Kenya
The International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) is a nonprofit research organization dedicated to empowering women and girls and promoting of gender equality. ICRW works with partners to conduct empirical research, build capacity and advocate for evidence-based, practical ways to change policies and programs. ICRW is headquartered in Washington, D.C., with regional offices in New Delhi, India, and Nairobi, Kenya.
ICRW seeks an experienced qualitative researcher to assist with an assessment of a child marriage prevention program in Coast Province, Kenya. The goal of the program is to delay marriage of 5,000 girls aged 9-18 years until adulthood, with targeted communities actively advocating for child protection and prevention of child marriage, and with targeted households improving their economic situation through Savings and Internal Lending Communities (SILCs).
ICRW is facilitating a participatory mid-project review of the project, which is being implemented by an international nongovernmental organization. One of the major activities for the participatory mid-project assessment is a site visit, which will be conducted in July/August 2011 to:
Assess Dialogue and Action Project (DAP) with respect to reduction of child marriage.
Review whether there are “good practices” in child marriage prevention that might be considered by project team as complementary and supportive of current program.
Review DAP M&E plan.
Provide recommendations to DAP team, including an assessment of how DAP might best position itself as an example of a potentially successful intervention (yielding lessons learned) to the global community.
ICRW will work with key staff as well as project stakeholders (program participants) to gain an understanding of the key drivers of early marriage in this region, how these program activities are (or are not) addressing those drivers, how the program is functioning more broadly, and how it could be adjusted during the final year of implementation. ICRW will facilitate focus group discussions (FGDs) and key information interviews (KIIs) in several communities in and around Malindi and Lamu.

ICRW seeks the services of an experienced qualitative researcher with experience in this region to provide support to the process. Specifically, the researcher will:
