The Department of Sociology at Furman University invites applications for a professorship at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full beginning Fall 2020. A Ph.D. in Sociology by time of appointment is preferred. Research and teaching specialization is open, although we are seeking a candidate that can significantly contribute to Furman’s strategic vision, the Furman Advantage, and its enhanced commitment to diversity and inclusion coupled with high-impact learning experiences through direct engagement with community partners. Candidates should submit a CV, list of references, a cover letter and a teaching statement. The cover letter should address the following: (a) how they would strengthen or supplement the department’s current curriculum and course offerings, (b) in what ways they would enhance undergraduate high-impact, engaged learning experiences as outlined by the Furman Advantage; (c) a record of past scholarly achievement and a clear plan for future research, and (d) describe how their teaching, scholarship, mentoring and/or service will contribute to a liberal arts college community that includes a commitment to diversity as one of its core values. The teaching statement should specifically explain the candidate’s: (a) a list of mid- and upper-level courses other than the introduction to sociology that the candidate would like to teach; (b) general approach to teaching undergraduate students; (c) specific examples of how they have implanted this pedagogical approach through previous teaching experiences. Teaching load is five courses per year.
