Initial thank you e-mails - as long as they are quick and to the point (just to show professional courtesy) - are okay. However, it will NOT affect your candidacy in any way. An unsolicited lengthy e-mail may be considered annoying. A few people think it's ok to send cards, but honestly, the last search committee I was on laughed about it. Insensitive? Probably but the reality is that there is always the chance of an a$$hole on a SC. Also, if you bombed in the phone interview, it's too late to save yourself so don't bother trying to redeem yourself in an e-mail. Just accept the loss and move on. Seriously, the best thing to do is just to wait and hope you get a call or e-mail inviting you to campus. In my opinion, the only time you EVER want to contact an SC is if there is something substantial that has changed (e.g., update CV with publication/grant, campus interview at another institution, job offer). Good thank you e-mail: "Thank you for ..." (two sentences MAX) Bad thank you e-mail (or creepy holiday card? ;D ): "Thank you for... I wanted to add to my response ... Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah" (1-2 pages )

I have done many phone interviews this season. The ones that materialized to campus visits (4 out of 8) all did so within 1-8 days. Good luck to you. Do not prod them any further now that you sent the thank you email. If an extremely long time passes--i.e. a couple months--and you have a reason to get in touch with them, then do so. But by then, you already have a feeling where you stand. Hopefully, you will hear WAY before that though!
