Position Summary
This full-time tenure track faculty position includes teaching sociology courses and supporting the academic programs of Tacoma Community College. TCC's Sociology program also focuses on preparing students to transfer major-ready to bachelor's programs at 4-year institutions. The successful applicant will be asked to teach Introduction to Sociology, as well as other 200-level sociology courses. This position will also collaborate in interdisciplinary Learning Communities and team-teach with other TCC faculty. This position complements the existing specialties in the department, and reports to the Dean for Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
•Prepare and teach Introduction to Sociology
•Prepare and teach Sociology of African Americans and/or Sociology of Native Americans
•Prepare and teach additional courses in sociology according to department needs and candidate specialty; such courses may include (but are not limited to) Introduction to the Sociology of Deviance and Social Control, Women's Studies, and Gender and Sexuality
•Work with faculty on program and interdisciplinary curriculum development
•Advise and support students in developing their educational goals and monitoring their progress toward completion
•Serve on committees and participate in department, division and college activities normally assigned to full-time faculty (e.g. assessment, professional development)
•Perform other related duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications •Master's degree in Sociology or closely related field from an accredited college or university
•College teaching experience at the freshman/sophomore level
Preferred Qualifications •Experience teaching sociology at a community college
•Graduate course work in Sociology of African Americans and/or Sociology of Native Americans
•Ph.D. in Sociology from an accredited college or university
•Experience conducting sociological research
•Engagement in social activism, civic activity, or community service that supports underrepresented or marginalized populations
•Experience teaching in Learning Communities or in team-teaching settings

•Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, and staff
•Dedication to remaining current in equitable pedagogical practices
•Successful teaching experience in a diverse environment
•A repertoire of different teaching methods appropriate to different circumstances and varied learners
•Experience reviewing and developing curriculum
•Experience with classroom technology and online learning management systems (e.g. Canvas)

Terms of Employment
This is a full-time, tenure track faculty position contracted on an annual basis. Classes assigned to the successful candidate may be on campus, hybrid online, or fully online with an online learning management system (Canvas) component for some class materials. Placement on the faculty salary schedule will be commensurate with educational background and experience. The salary will be prorated to reflect the actual contract days remaining in the academic year. A collective bargaining agreement exists, and membership in the TCC Federation of Teachers or payment of a service fee is available. Flexibility is required to meet the needs of the department. Evening and off campus assignments may be a part of the instructional load. Degrees must be from accredited colleges or universities recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and verified by National Student Clearinghouse.
