Responsibilities: The successful candidate is expected to develop a nationally recognized and externally funded research program in applied social sciences that is relevant to the state and region. The successful candidate is also expected to deliver excellent teaching with an innovative curriculum that meets the needs of the Rural Sociology program and the department. In addition, the candidate is expected to contribute to the university's outreach mission and to provide service to the discipline as well as to Auburn University, the College of Agriculture and the Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology.
Qualifications: Minimum qualifications include an earned Ph.D. from an accredited institution in Rural Sociology, Sociology, or a closely related discipline at the time employment begins, along with documented experience in research and teaching. The candidate must have experience conducting research on one of the department’s core focal areas which are: natural resources and the environment; rural and community development; and agrifood systems. Research interests in other related applied social science topics such as demography and international development also are welcome as they relate to the three core focal areas. The candidate must possess the organizational and interpersonal skills necessary to communicate and interact effectively with diverse audiences. The candidate must meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States at the time appointment is scheduled to begin, and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment. Strong quantitative skills are desired, along with an interest in teaching research methods and statistics and the qualifications to do so. Other qualifications of interest include an ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary setting; previous teaching experience in rural sociology or closely related fields; demonstrated record of securing extramural funding for research or educational programs; and government or industry experience in sectors involving the department’s three core focal areas.
