The Department of Sociology in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham ( UAB) invites applications for two open rank positions with a start date of August 2019. We seek candidates with demonstrated scholarship in medical sociology; research areas are open. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Sociology or related field, a record of strong independent research, experience with or potential for obtaining external funding, and a strong commitment to quality instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
The department offers a B.A. and M.A. in Sociology and a B.S. and Ph.D. in Medical Sociology. Research in the department focuses on medical sociology and health-related topics. Currently, the department has about 100 undergraduate majors, 25 Ph.D. students, 54 professional master's students, and 10 full-time faculty members with anticipated growth in the next few years. With over 19,500 students and 2,200 full-time faculty members, UAB ranks in the top 20 public universities for federal research funding and is the major teaching-research university in the state. Interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching is prominent, and the Department of Sociology collaborates closely with multiple units across campus.
