Position Description
SOCIOLOGY/CRIMINOLOGY AND GENDER - The Department of Social Sciences in the College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, academic-year Assistant Professor of Criminology and Gender to begin September 12, 2019. The assistant professorship in criminology and gender would be associated with the sociology program in the Department of Social Sciences. Candidates will teach undergraduate classes in sociology, criminology and gender, quantitative methods and /or social theory. The typical teaching assignment is 12 units per quarter, with correspondingly reasonable research and service expectations, and with a significant reduction in course load in the first one to two years to help establish an active program of research and professional development.
A Ph.D. in one of the following is required: Criminology or Sociology with a specialization in Criminology or closely related field, with substantive work in the area of gender and criminology. University teaching experience and evidence of an active research agenda are expected. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Candidates will be expected to demonstrate a broad and critical appreciation of the field; teach undergraduate classes in criminology and gender, quantitative methods and/or social theory; conduct ongoing research in related fields and publish their findings in scholarly venues; supervise senior projects and provide advising and other supervision for sociology majors; and participate in service at various levels of the university. They will be asked to contribute to the university's mission, "Learn by Doing," and participate constructively in university life and undergraduate education.
