Do good news (e.g. interview appointment) always come by phone first? Or is it possible to receive the news by email?
Info will be REALLY appreciated: I simply can't go on checking my email every 5 secs AND staring at my cell for hours (checking every hour or so if I accidentally muted it)

In my experience (5 on campus interviews), news about short lists and the like almost always come through email, but news about interviews and the like almost always come by phone.
That is, I was notified of all my "short lists" by email, and all my on campus interviews by phone.

I've only had one on campus interview and a phone interview prior to it. I was called and alerted of the interest in the phone interview, obviously called for the phone interview, and then emailed regarding the subsequent on campus interview.

I agree with qwerty - on-campus interviews generally come by phone. It doesn't really help with the anxiety though.

Invitations for campus visits have arrived via phone for me. I'm usually close enough to a computer that I'm able to quickly Google the area code so I know which school is most likely to be calling! Telephone/Skype interviews and long list notification (which have always preceded the telephone on-campus visit invitation phone call for me) have happened via email.

Whichever number you placed first on your CV/application/cover letter! I advise listing only one's cell number on applications. Your fellow grad students and/or current employer doesn't need to know your business at this point.

I had two on-campus interviews last year, and both invitations came via e-mail. So I guess there isn't much of a real pattern here. You are stuck staring at both...

Both email and phone. I think I like email better--it does not feel like a 'are you there?' test.

I've scheduled two interviews so far, and both have come over email. So, yeah, check both I like email. It might be less formal, but I need preparation before talking to someone. |

I'm basically only planning to do this if I 1) have an offer from somewhere else, and 2) I'm really interested in the position. But, I'd be interested to hear other thoughts. |
