Had a request for letters yesterday. Anyone else? Any inside info on whether this means long short list or short long list, or whatever? I know it's silly to obsess over one specific job, but here we are.

This certainly means you aren't out of the running. It might not mean anything, though, given that they asked for letters to be sent by the deadline.
And most of us can't avoid obsessing over each job, so you have company on that point!

Yeah, I think the most likely meaning of the email request is that I just forgot to submit my letters on time, or that I otherwise botched the process, and that they are being thorough prior to jumping in to the review process. I was just so excited to see an email from their institution that I needed to get it out somewhere.
Anyways, good luck to everyone this year! May all the old people retire!
